This class explores the concept of lurking pathogens (Fu Xie) and their role in chronic and complex disease. It reexamines the Qi level and the traditional Wei–Qi–Ying–Blood framework, focusing on pathogens or pathogenic influences that become concealed in deeper tissues and gradually alter the body’s internal terrain. These influences may be infectious, chemical, or pharmaceutical in origin and can become increasingly difficult to mobilize as they consume qi and yin and contribute to phlegm, blood stasis, and other complications.
The class will also examine therapeutic methods for mobilizing and eliminating these concealed influences, including maintaining open pathways, regulating Qi dynamics, venting from interior to exterior, clearing deeper heat, restoring fluids, and directing pathogenic factors toward routes of elimination.
Particular attention is given to the qualities and organoleptic characteristics of aromatic and piercing herbs and how herbs such as Huo Xiang, Pei Lan, Qing Hao, Qin Jiao, Sheng Ma, Chai Hu, Huang Qi, and Jie Geng can facilitate movement, venting, and the reopening of deeper structures.
Dr. Westhauser is licensed in Virginia and Washington, D.C., a former professional member of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) and Board Certified by the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology (NCBAHM).
She has been in private practice in the Metropolitan area since 2004 and has treated over 20,000 patients. Since 2013 she has worked at the Maryland University of Integrative Health as a clinical supervisor in the Chinese Herbal Program and is the former Director of the Chinese Herbal Program (2018-2022). In addition she is an adjunct faculty member at the Virginia University of Integrative Medicine and Yo San University.
Dr. Westhauser studied at the Maryland Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, China and the Maryland University of Integrative Health. She has completed Mazin Al-Khafaji’s two year Dermatology Program and received her doctorate from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.
