PLEASE JOIN US IN WELCOMING Julia urics, l.ac. ON THURSDAY, january 15TH, 2025 AT 5PM PT/6PM MT/7PM CT/8PM ET
There are several species of plants in the Ligusticum genus that have been used medicinally in both TCM and Western herbology. Chuan Xiong, Ligusticum wallichii is an herb that plays a fundamental part in many key formulas that support blood production and relief from stagnant blood. It is essential in reproductive formulas as well as relief from musculoskeletal pain. It’s aromatic scent is a unique blend of pungent, spicy and sweet, which is common to most of the Ligusticum genus. Other noteworthy plants of the same genus include Ligusticum jeholense Gao Ben and Ligusticum canbyi Osha.
In this presentation we will discuss the nature of Ligusticum wallichii, where it grows in Asia, the climate and geographical conditions that support healthy plants, and where in the U.S. other species of Ligusticum thrive. We will include a comparison with the other Ligusticum species: we will compare the climates as well as medicinal properties to get a deeper sense of their subtle differences, and their similarities.

Julia is a licensed acupuncturist, interdisciplinary herbalist, gardener, and geographer who is humbled by the incredible lineage of Chinese medicine and the legacy of Asian herbal wisdom. She/her/they/them has resided in Nevada County since 2013, with a break from 2017 to 2020 to attend acupuncture school in Santa Cruz, CA. She attended ACTCM from 2005 to 2007, and left acupuncture school to learn more about growing herbs with Peg Schafer in Sonoma County. She then took a nearly ten-year break travelling, mapping, and exploring metaphysics, until the medicine called her back in. Julia has been cultivating many Chinese herbs we use in our pharmacopeia in Nevada County, including Huang Qin, Ma Huang, Jing Jie and others. She completed a two-year academic program in GIS and geospatial mapping. She is currently practicing as an L.Ac. in downtown Nevada City, CA, and is a Practitioner Liaison for Five Flavors Herbs. Julia has been involved with the Lilium Initiative since 2020, and hopes that other practitioners will support the movement by collaborating with and investing in domestic farmers of Asian medicinals.
